Today I brought out R2 to the Orange Public Library, for their Star Wars Day event. Maddy also came with her dome and some droid parts, and we were joined by members of several Star Wars clubs.
It wouldn't be an event if there weren't people moving in for pictures as soon as R2 is out of the car.
It looks like I'll be back on November 16 with Mike, judging by the large sign in the lobby.
We moved into the Community room, where Obi-Shawn Crosby read Green Eggs and Ham to a large crowd of young families.
I gave a brief talk about the R2 Builders Club and my R2, and kids lined up for photos after.
The Saber Guild put on their show, which had the young kids riveted.
Afterward, we moved to a different area of the library for more group photo ops.
It was a brief two-hour event, but R2's day wasn't quite done.
I motored about 30 miles down the road, to Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor, where we were celebrating our friend Elizabeth's something-th birthday. As a surprise, I worked out with the management a way to have R2 bring out her birthday sundae. In the meantime, R2 hid in the break room.
For those unfamiliar with Farrell's, it's one of those places where they play a siren and beat a drum while several staff members clap and sing and jam to a Happy Birthday song.
When it was time for dessert, I excused myself and a few minutes later, R2 appeared with the sundae, much to everyone's surprise and delight.
Coincidently, my old roommate Manny (who lives about 50 miles north) and his daughter happened to be there too after a soccer tournament, so they jumped in for our group picture.
A good, busy day.
