Today R2 joined members of the Rebel Legion and 501st to help with the opening weekend of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in 3D.
This event at the AMC 14 in Tustin, CA was one of several official Lucasfilm & AMC special events around the country, and featured the building of a Lego mosaic, and face/arm painting, in addition to hosting the characters.
Disregard the disembodied head.
Arrival time was 10:00am. In order to get to the changing room for the characters, R2 had to navigate behind the concession stand. By the end of our visit, there was more popcorn than floor back there.
The characters changed into costume upstairs. Lucasfilm flew in Matt Bastyr as our Darth Maul from Minnesota, along with his brother/makeup artist Pete for this event.
At 11:00am it was showtime, as we waded into the crowd.
At one point we assembled for group pictures so people could line up and jump in for a picture with all the characters.
Darth Maul may look formidable, but he needs to watch his back.
By early evening, the Lego mosaic had been completed.
Near the end of the event, management and staff also took a group picture, and provided passes for a future visit. It was good to be back out after a few weeks off.
